Strands

I'm trying to make sense of the relationship between the different styles of art I produce by making spontaneous notes as I work.

(I also plan to use the notes as the basis for my artist's statement.)

There is a thread – although it isn't immediately obvious even to me – that ties the abstract to the figurative; the cubist to the symbolist. Palette plays a big part but it's not only that.

I have a deep need to draw it all together into a coherent whole as if these different aspects were just so many pieces of a puzzle that, when put together in a certain configuration, will produce a revelation.

There is no forcing this process of assimilation; I work back and forth across the range gradually drawing the strands in closer; I write down what I notice but the conundrum cannot be solved with the intellect; the notes just form part of the weft in and out of which the images are woven; the pattern will reveal itself with time and patience.

Liked this post? Word of mouth is the main way for indie creators to get known.
I'd be SO grateful if you shared this with someone you think might like it!

Cherry, does there need to be a revelation, or a completion of the puzzle?

What if the main connector or common strand between all the things you create (have created and will create) is simply you?

I know I've created in a range of media, and styles and voices, and probably taking a selection at random you'd be hard pushed to realise it was the same artist.

What will you have if you do have this revelation? What will it give you that you don't have now? (How) Will it change what you create?

Your post has got me thinking, as you might be able to tell!

Dan

PS/ Just looking around your new (ish?) blog for the first time and like it. Di posted a link in her Thirty Days thread on CCS and I headed over...

Thanks Dan, YOUR reply has certainly got ME thinking! I guess the answer that springs to mind is 'a clearer direction'. I can see that logically it may seem unnecessary to draw the strands together but I can't help feeling intuitively that at some point it's meant to happen...

Glad you like the (yes, it's new) blog and that leaving a comment was straightforward. The site is still a work in progress with lot's of stuff still to add. How kind of Di to post a link. Do come back!
